Last week I posed a question: Can pilots learning to fly for personal reasons play a role in stabilizing the cyclical flight training industry?
Here are some of the benefits that personal pilots can bring.
I am writing this on December 17th: the anniversary of the Wright Brothers first powered flight at Kill Devil Hills, near Kitty Hawk North Carolina. The Wrights’ saw their flying machine as a tool for the military and chose to keep word of their achievement quiet, not even entering production until they had a military customer.
Their big rival, Glen Curtiss saw flying very differently. He had a passion for flying and soon started a flying school in Hammondsport, New York, building airplanes and teaching people to fly recreationally.
Here’s the thing … it was Curtiss’ vision that grew general aviation in America (the Smithsonian didn’t even recognize the Wrights’ achievement until after World War 2). Twenty five years after the Wrights' made that first flight on December 17, 1903, the Curtiss Aeroplane & Motor Company bought out Wright Aeronautical and became the largest aviation company in the world.
Something to think about.

Imagine the phone rings. A guy is on the line trying to sell you *acetylsalicylic acid*. He has a great deal for you if you sign up right now. You ask them for more information and they rave about how their acetylsalicylic acid also includes hypromellose, powdered cellulose, corn starch and triacetin. Here’s the thing … if aspirin is sold only on the features (ingredients) it contains, you’re probably not going to buy. But if it is sold for the benefits it brings you––muscle and joint pain...
Why do people buy Ferrari sports cars? Prices start at around $250,000 with the most expensive production models topping out around double that. The performance is not legally useable on any public road, but the sales figures show Ferrari sold over 11,000 last year. Why do people buy Rolex watches? Prices start at around $10,000 (just under the cost of a pilot license) and go up from there. They’re not as accurate as the GPS-derived time our smartphones display, but Rolex still sell about...
Customer experience is the process is matching a business’ procedures with customer expectations. Done well and you have created a fan; poorly and you get bad reviews. Recently I took my dad to get a haircut. We went to a nearby barbershop with a sign in the window saying “Walk-In Customers Welcome.” When we walked-in, the shop was busy with school kids getting their hair cut the day before school restarted. The barber stopped cutting hair, came over and suggested my dad make an appointment...
